Going through the menopause will be a very different experience for each woman, however, hot flushes and night sweats, are one symptom that many women have to endure. Although HRT is known to help relieve this particular symptom, it does come with certain potential side effects. Due to these, many women search out more natural therapies to help ease them through these difficult symptoms.
A recent randomized controlled study by Gozuyesil E, Baser M (2016), published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, looked at the effect of foot reflexology applied to women aged between 40 and 60 on vasomotor complaints and quality of life. 120 women were randomly assigned to an experimental group or control group. The experimental group received foot reflexology whilst the control group received a non-specific foot massage. The results showed a decrease in symptoms in both groups, however, there was a statistically significant improvement found in the reflexology group. The conclusion being that reflexology may help in decreasing hot flushes and increasing the quality of life in menopausal women. |
