Acupuncture originated in China and other Far Eastern cultures over 2,500 years ago and it still features today in their mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional Western medicine. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world as more and more people are finding out about the benefits it can bring.
Acupuncture is based on principles and theories of Chinese medicine. It works by helping to maintain your body's natural equilibrium by the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of "qi", your body's vital energy. For various reasons, qi can become deficient or blocked which can result in pain or illness, whether physical or mental. By correcting the flow of qi, harmony and balance is restored.
Acupuncture is a holistic therapy which means that treatment is aimed at the root of your condition. This approach means that, as well as hopefully alleviating your main symptoms, your overall sense of well-being should improve.
Who has acupuncture?
People mainly come for acupuncture to help with a specific symptom or condition that is troubling them. Others use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell or “out of sorts” but don't have a conventional Western diagnosis. For others, it is simply used to enhance their feelings of well-being and optimise their sense of health.
Acupuncture can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine.
